Guest Post with Math Freebie by Third Grade Bookworm

Today's the day!

I am Abby from Third Grade Bookworm and I am so excited to be here with Tabitha! I teach third grade in Georgia. My school is departmentalized, so I teach Reader's Workshop, Writer's Workshop and a Skills Block (ELA) two times a day.

Normally my posts are focused on reading, writing and language arts but I've been teaching summer school and I have a fun math freebie to share with you!

Our summer school worked a little differently this year. We hosted more of a "summer camp" and invited students that we wanted to foster a love of learning in. Our goal was to plant a seed of excitement for school in these kids, and I think it worked. :) Some of our "courses" included Cupcake Wars, Iron Chef, Kickball, Photography and Game Gurus. During Game Gurus, we played games that would build mental math, place value, addition and probability skills - Yahtzee, Mancala, Mastermind and....

If you have not played this game before, march yourself straight to Target and look for this:

Or, you can go to the Dollar Store and buy a pack of dice. You'll need six.

When my teaching partner and I were planning the games we wanted to use in Game Gurus, Farkle immediately came to mind. However, I knew that our students would need a recording sheet that included scoring reminders and a kid-friendly list of the rules for playing. So, I created the packet below.

Just click on the picture to download your freebie. I hope you enjoy it! :)

Thank you so much, Tabitha for having me! Do any of you have any fun ways to incorporate reading, writing and math into your summer programs?

Don't forget to hop through the rest of the blog swap posts.

"Now you can hop to my post at Mrs. V's Adventures in Learning and download a Cootie Catcher freebie for the beginning of the year!"

Spanish Freebie & Blog Swap & Hop

With more free time now in the summer, I've actually managed to do a couple of guest blog posts. That's really quite a feat for someone who seems to get writer's blog every...time...I the computer! Geez! I blame it on learning Spanish later in life, but that's a pretty lame excuse.

So, Guest Post #1: Spanish Vocabulary Cube

It's already up and published at Krista's Second Grade Super Kids blog. You'll see how we used cubes to practice Spanish vocabulary in my classroom and you can pick up your own free copy (click image).

Guest Post #2: Getting to Know You Cootie Catcher

This will be published Saturday at Mrs. V's Adventures in Learning via the Blog Swap & Hop. This is where a group of teachers are guest blogging on each other's blogs with lots of fun tips and freebies. I'll be sure to share when my post is published because I think it's a freebie you would enjoy using with your students at the beginning of the year (not that we're thinking about that yet! :P).

I also have two other guest posts in the works, and I'll be sure to update when those happen..........Oh gosh, writer's block is creeping up again :(......time to get back to working on my next themed classroom pack. Here's a little image from the pack.

How about....the first person to comment and tell me what the theme is will get a free copy of the whole pack when it's done. Let's see if anybody actually made it through this whole post! Cause I almost didn't!

Classroom Shopping in Argentina!

As any fellow immersion teachers can relate, the chance to be in a country of your target language is a shopping gold mine for classroom materials. It is very hard to find inexpensive content resources in other languages in the US.

I'm so happy to be here in Argentina, my husband's homeland, and my luck is even better because my sister-in-law is an art teacher and has been an awesome shopping partner these past few days. Here are a few pics of my purchases:

Cool Science Magazines by Genios

Neat Review Game - You touch the definition with the right answer and the light at the top lights up. This will double as an awesome illustration of a circuit when we learn about electricity.

My hubby trying to be patient - school shopping is not his thing!

Adorable Childrens' Books

Science and Spanish Language Books

I met with an English teacher here, Evangelina Castano, and she was so kind to give me these Spanish materials. Así son los maestros.

Tomorrow we are heading to Buenos Aires. Here's hoping I won't run into anything else I have to have for my classroom :P. But these opportunities are rare, so I know I have to take advantage.

Hope your summer is going great!

Edmodo & Animoto - Awesome Tech Tools for the Classroom

Hey, ya'll! I'm writing from Argentina! Last night I had the awesome opportunity to meet a fellow teacher whose job is very similar to mine - she teaches English in a Spanish world, whereas I teach Spanish in an English world. She gave me a bunch of great ideas, and also a bag of Spanish goodies that she doesn't need since she teaches English - YES! MUCHAS GRACIAS, EVANGELINA!

Anyways, this morning I woke up and wrote a guest post for the Organized Classroom Blog about using Edmodo and Animoto in my classroom.

You may be using these tools, and if so, please share how! If you'd like to know more, please hop on over to the Organized Classroom Blog to read more.

Happy Sunday!
